There are a lot of things that are worse certainly, but a frustration is when you get a cup that has a hole in it. A cup has one job, to hold your water so that when you need a drink, you can have one. However, if there is a hole in the cup, it can’t do its job. God used this metaphor to describe Judah’s sin against Him. Jeremiah 2:13 says, “For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns–broken cisterns that can hold no water.” Instead of trusting in the Lord to fill them up all day, every day; Judah chased after mirages. God is charging Judah with idolatry. They thought that the false gods they were chasing after could give them what only the true God could give them. What about you and I? Who are we chasing after? Some of the broken cisterns that we chase are people’s approval, money, possessions, and any number of other things. We think, if I can just get _________, then I will have what I need. However, the only thing that can fill us each and every day is God.
We must keep our heart diligently, to seek after God, and not the many idols calling out to us. We must remember that only God can give us what we need, and in His love for us, He has promised to provide for it. Why chase after something that was created, when you can pursue and find the Creator? You were created by God, for God; not the things of this world. If you are thirsty for purpose, love, and acceptance; look not further than God. Only He can give you those things that you deeply long for.
By His grace and for His glory,
